Really into this music this week. It’s actually quite a rarity to stumble on some stuff that really hits me (I’m a bit of a snob), but this has certainly been doing it! Check it out.

Just finished Friday Night Lights. It kind of feels like this…
(After 01:13) —well, maybe its not that bad…
Found this after seeing that Devendra Banhart did a cover of Colorado Girl. I listened to it one time through and all the songs are enjoyable to listen to. Some didn’t seem to do much for me, while others really stood out right away - particularly Son Volt’s “Rex’s Blues,” Foreign Born’s “Waiting Around To Die,” and Steve Earle’s “Ft. Worth Blues.” Also, they didn’t include a Norah Jones cover because it didn’t “cut it” which makes me trust them more.
When you awake, the blog I found it on, seems really great, too.
Here’s the songs:
1. Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle- If I Needed You
2. Gillian Welch- Pancho and Lefty
3. Devendra Banhart- Colorado Girl
4. Son Volt- Rex’s Blues
5. Azure Ray- For The Sake of the Song
6. Foreign Born- Waiting Around To Die
7. Peter Roman and Nanci Griffith- No Lonesome Tune
8. Nanci Griffith- Tecumseh Valley
9. Steve Earle- Fort Worth Blues
10. Vetiver- Standin’
11. Guy Clark- Don’t You Take It Too Bad
12. Steve Young- No Place To Fall
This is a playlist with songs that all include a place name in the title. I took liberties with a few titles - but for the most part I stayed true. Most of the songs are in the country blues style, with a bit of r & b. A couple songs are from my computer and were not on spotify, so I’m not too sure if you will be able to hear those ones.
Dark as a Dungeon - as recorded by Sparklehorse.
Versions like this make me interested in doing some covers.
Plus, I love this song - I mean, it is the epitome of country music writing - simple, yet so many layers…
and I heart sparklehorse.
If Howlin’ Wolf found his howl by trying to imitate Jimmie Rodger’s yodel, I wonder what would happen if I try…
On a side note - I was record hunting for Jimmie Rodgers a few months back and picked up a Jimmie Rodgers record at some store in Chicago and was real excited. I put it on and was real disappointed. I started to think that Jimmie Rodgers made real crappy music to make money and then made good music where he yodels on the side. I don’t know why I didn’t consider the possibility of two Jimmie Rodgers. hmm…Needless to say, I haven’t played that record again and have since picked up the real Jimmie Rodgers seen above.
One row of one warehouse at Banana Records. Yesterday was country day - picked up some Jimmie Rodgers, Carter Family, and a few of Willie’s. Anyone who ever heads to Tampa/ St. Petersburg, I highly recommend this shop. The prices are fair, maybe a little expensive, but you get many of the records that you dream about having if you dream about having old country records.
